Gary Van Stelton / Homecoming Memory
In the 2nd half of the Rochester game I was severely concussed and so have absolutely no memory of the game or the dance afterwards. I was sitting on the bench in dreamland and soon Gary joined me with similar symptoms. My only memory of the night was how beautiful the moon looked. Gary and I got into a long discussion about the exact color of the moon totally oblivious to the game raging on at ground level! “Doesn’t the moon look slightly pumpkin orange?” “No, it’s more harvest orange.” And then a little later someone came racing by (the great Chuck Helling) and we turned to each other, “What’s all the yelling about?!” Gary became a wonderful artist and inspired generations of Fairmont High students, many who gave such beautifully poignant tributes at his funeral. Gary, we truly miss you but are so happy that you were able to touch so many lives sharing your love and passion for art.
